P0336 — Crankshaft Position Sensor A Range/Performance
High severityWhat it means
P0336 is stored when the engine control unit sees a fault involving the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor circuit. The crankshaft position sensor tells the control unit engine speed and piston position; without a reliable signal the engine cannot run. A “range/performance” fault means the value is present but implausible — it does not agree with other sensors or expected conditions.
Common symptoms
- Readings that drift or disagree with related sensors
- No-start or stalling
- Intermittent cutting out while driving
- Hard starting
Likely causes
- Drifting, contaminated or aged sensor
- A mechanical issue skewing the reading
- Faulty crankshaft position sensor
- A damaged reluctor/tone ring or incorrect sensor air gap
What to check first
- Cross-check the reading against related sensors in live data on a cold start
- Watch live RPM while cranking — no RPM points to the CKP signal
- Inspect the sensor connector and tone ring
Can you keep driving?
Take it seriously: a failing crank sensor can stall the engine without warning, so avoid driving if it cuts out.
