P0011 — Camshaft Position Timing Over-Advanced (Bank 1)
High severityWhat it means
The actual camshaft timing on bank 1 is more advanced than the engine control unit commanded. This is a variable valve timing (VVT) fault, and in a large share of cases the root cause is low, dirty or wrong-viscosity engine oil starving the VVT system.
Common symptoms
- Rough idle and hard starting
- Loss of power
- Rattling noise from the engine
- Increased fuel consumption and check engine light
Likely causes
- Low, degraded or wrong-viscosity engine oil (very common)
- Faulty VVT/oil control solenoid
- Clogged oil passages or solenoid screen
- Stretched timing chain
- Failed camshaft phaser
What to check first
- Check the engine oil level and condition first — an oil change with the correct grade fixes many cases
- Inspect and test the VVT (oil control) solenoid and its screen
- Listen for timing chain rattle on cold start
- Compare commanded vs actual cam advance in live data
Can you keep driving?
Limit driving. Valve-timing faults can escalate into expensive engine damage — check the oil immediately and have the car inspected promptly.
