P0441 — EVAP System Incorrect Purge Flow
Low severityWhat it means
P0441 is stored when the engine control unit sees a fault involving the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system. The EVAP system captures fuel vapours from the tank and routes them to be burned instead of escaping to the atmosphere. The control unit measured a flow that does not match what it commanded, so the system is not moving air or vapour as expected.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light with no strong driveability change
- Usually only a check engine light
- An occasional faint fuel smell
- Failed emissions test
Likely causes
- Blocked passage, stuck valve or solenoid
- Cracked or disconnected hose
- Loose or faulty fuel cap
- Cracked hose, or a stuck purge/vent valve
What to check first
- Inspect the related hoses, valve and solenoid for blockage or leaks
- Check and retighten the fuel cap first, then clear the code
- Smoke-test the system and test the purge/vent valves
Can you keep driving?
Safe to drive; it is an emissions fault rather than a mechanical risk, but it will fail an emissions inspection.
