P0128 — Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature
Low severityWhat it means
The engine is taking too long to reach its normal operating temperature. In most cases the thermostat is stuck open, letting coolant circulate through the radiator all the time so the engine never warms up properly.
Common symptoms
- Temperature gauge reads low or rises very slowly
- Weak cabin heating in winter
- Higher fuel consumption
- Check engine light
Likely causes
- Thermostat stuck open (most common)
- Faulty engine coolant temperature sensor
- Low coolant level
- Radiator fan running constantly
What to check first
- Check the coolant level first
- Watch the coolant temperature warm-up curve in live data — it should climb steadily to roughly 85–105 °C
- Compare coolant and intake air temperatures on a cold start: they should match
- Replace the thermostat if warm-up is clearly too slow
Can you keep driving?
Safe to drive, but fix it: a cold-running engine wastes fuel, wears faster and heats the cabin poorly.
